I know this is a bit late but I couldn’t let this event happen without coverage. Sorry for the delay.
The date was May 4th 2013. I had the idea for the spring formal race for some time but I didn’t know how to go forward and present it to the masses. The idea of riders dressed up in drag, racing through the streets was funny enough, but would the riders of NYC go for it. Only one way to find out. This was a race for those looking to have a good time with good people. I’d seen photos of drag races thrown in other states; however, this is New York City, so this would be one for the books. It was mandatory for the guys to come dressed in female attire (the sexier, the better) and females would have to come dressed as a gentleman (with beard or mustache).
The turnout was around 20+ riders which is more than I had expected. Although I had organized the race, in solidarity I also dressed the part. I need to get crazy with my friends also. Registration was at Columbus Circle and the group of crossdressing bikers gained plenty of attention. I was doing some last minute race preparation. While riding to registration, Spencer caught a flat on the Williamsburg Bridge and had to walk home.
With all the craziness of the race, I couldn’t cover all of the checkpoints but there were a few people helping me shoot photos. The finish line was the Bike Expo on South Street. which was the perfect finish line for an alley cat race. Gloria shot some photos at the finish line while I collected manifest and discussed the craziness that occurred during the race with the riders.
Miguel had taken 1st place and took the best fall right in front of the Victoria’s Secret store on 34th & 6th.
After the race, we toured the bike expo and checked out what the companies had to offer. From there we shot over to Billy Hurricanes for some drinks and wings. Overall the Spring Formal alley cat was a major success in my book. Thanks to everyone who came out to race, help and support what we do at T.O.D., I can’t wait until next year’s Spring Formal.
